Mouse-sized Steps

Mouse-Sized Steps

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. 2 Timothy 4:7

In the film adaptation of C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the chief mouse Reepicheep is a master swordsman, er, swordsmouse. He proves to be a valiant ally to the children, who find themselves thrust into Narnia, and battles evil at their side, often leading the charge with his valor and bravery.

At the end of the movie, however, they have sailed so far east that they are at the edge of Aslan’s country (the Narnian equivalent of heaven). Aslan has met them and is headed back to his country beyond the boundary of the giant wave when Reepicheep calls out, asking if he may go too. Aslan agrees, and Reepicheep turns to say good-bye to the children. They have been through so much together, and Reepicheep has fought the good fight extremely well. But his time in Narnia has come to an end; now, with great joy, he looks forward to his future with Aslan.

I pray we all reach that day in our lives when we are able to say that we have fought the good fight. We have finished the race.

We have remained faithful.

For most of us, our faithful journey isn’t a fantastical adventure as much as a series of small, daily steps. How do we treat our family? Our friends? Our coworkers? Our employees?

Do we stand up for justice and the dignity of others? The dignity of people who do not have a voice?

Do we tell everyone of God’s grace, freely offered to us and to them?

Fighting the good fight is less about the moments of grandeur that we often dream of and more about daily taking up our cross and sacrificing ourselves and our own wants and desires for those around us.

Your journey is still in progress. Make it a faithful one.
