A Bright Reflection

You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. Matthew 5:14-16

Over the last few nights we’ve had a waxing moon that culminated in a full moon. A waxing moon is a moon growing from right to left, from a new moon, to a sliver of a moon, to a full and radiant moon. Of course, the moon—bright as it may be—doesn’t generate its own light but rather reflects the sun’s light.

In John 8:12, Jesus says He is the light of the world. These verses from Matthew are found in what is referred to as the Sermon on the Mount (chapters 5 through 7). Whether Jesus was teaching crowds gathered at one time on a mountainside or the sermon is a compilation of teachings during His entire ministry, Jesus emphasized that “you are the light of the world.”

We had many of those conversations in the locker room with our players during the course of the season—not necessarily repeating Jesus’ exact words, but urging each other to find places to make a difference. At home, with our wives and family, with friends, and in making our communities and the people we find there better. Players have an opportunity to stand for something positive, and they need to reflect God’s light to accomplish that.

I was talking to someone the other day about light and how Christ has called us to be lights—His lights. We might be in a waxing or waning or full stage, but the key is to reflect the Son of God, Jesus Christ. If we reflect Christ’s light to the world by our thoughts, words, and actions, we have a good chance to change the world.

Uncommon Key > Tonight, or whenever the moon is visible, spend a moment looking at it, and pray that nothing clouds Jesus Christ’s light in your life. Others need to see the Light, and you may be the only person they know who reflects Him.
