The Importance Of Salt

You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor?

Matthew 5:13

Salt makes us thirsty, right? The Bible tells believers in Christ that we are the salt of the earth. Being around us should make other people thirsty for who we know. Salt is a preservative. When we point others to Christ, not only does He enhance our lives and theirs, but He is the only One who preserves us for eternity.

In fact, growing in my love for Christ was jump-started my first year at Erskine College when I met a true salt-of-the-earth friend. Sweet Cecilia seemed to know Him in a more personal way, and I wanted to know Him like she did. Because of her influence, I asked for God’s help to know Him more directly, too, like Cecilia. In the days and years since, He has continued to answer my prayer by putting a lot of salty people (in the sweetest sense of the word) around me and speaking to my heart when I read His Word.

There are many simple, practical ways we can be salt and connect with people, thus connecting them to Christ. If we do not reach out to others in the name of Christ, who will?

If you don’t feel important enough to make a difference, remember: you and I are salt! Christ used salt as an analogy because it was essential to life back then, and it still is a vital part of our health. We would die without salt. Only He can preserve this world, and He wants to use us as teaspoons and tablespoons of salt, more than we could even imagine!

Whether we feel salty or not, God wants to use you and me to draw others to Himself. He will do this hard work in others’ hearts as we abide in Him. Ponder Matthew 5:13 and John 15:4, verses that tell us how we can be flavorful for Christ.
