Sweet Scars
Sweet Scars
Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies.
2 Corinthians 4:10
I’m going to guess that many of us have a few scars. It’s impossible to survive many years in this world without bearing emotional or physical scars from the hurts we inevitably experience. While they may not look pretty to us, they remind us of a great truth: our scars can be signs of growth and can mirror the scars Jesus bore for us.
In My Utmost for His Highest, Oswald Chambers says, “It is better to enter into life maimed and lovely in God’s sight than to appear lovely to man’s eyes but lame to God’s.” I so want my “ugly” scars to reveal Jesus’ beautiful character.
The difficult times in my life, along with the scars I still carry from walking through them, really did draw me closer to the Lord and fertilize the desire in me to live for Him. I can recognize some of the beauty that has already emerged from those scars.
No one feels good right after surgery, but with each suffering situation, we can gain patience and courage as we submit to the Lord. We always need patience and courage when we give our whole selves to the Lord—for His plans and not our own. It is easier to accept physical and emotional suffering when we know it has been filtered through His hands that were nailed to the cross for us. He took on the surgery of the whole sinful world.
As we allow Jesus’ love to glow through our scars, He beautifies those symbols of pain and glorifies Himself to a wounded world in need of His healing.
We have suffering in common with Jesus. Ask Him to glow beautifully through your scars today.
