Sweet Ps

I will study your commandments and reflect on your ways. I will delight in your decrees and not forget your word.

Psalm 119:15-16

Psalm 119 is the longest psalm in the Bible, and as much as I would like to include it in its entirety here, there isn’t enough room! These two verses from the psalm are great motivators—I don’t want to miss a day of hearing God’s voice through the pages of Scripture. How in the world can I delight in His decrees if I don’t know them? How can I reflect on His ways if I do not know what God is like? How can I hear God’s voice above all others if I don’t recognize it?

In all honesty, I can’t delight in something I don’t understand or value simply because I’m told to do so. Our delight for something or someone is a gut-level response, a natural overflow of the heart. When I read God’s Word daily, I come to know and love Him, which leads me to delight in what He says—just as today’s Scripture says.

I don’t ever want to forget His Word. But because I have an imperfect memory and a tendency to question and wonder, I need reminders of all the reasons why He’s so worthy of my delight. Here are five Sweet P tips to cheer us all along in God’s ways:

1. Prioritize. Let’s make knowing God a priority. Knowing God is the purpose of reading His Word, which is accessible to everyone.
2. Pick a comfy spot in your home where you do not see the dishes and the laundry. Face a window or go outside. Have your Bible and a mug of coffee or tea handy.
3. Pray. Prayer is just talking to God: “Lord, will You teach me about Yourself when I open Your Word? Will You teach me about myself, and show me ways to put what You say into practice?”
4. Plunge in. Do not be afraid. He talks to all His people through His Word.
5. Put some sticky notes near your Bible to mark places that you want to return to as you flip back and forth through His truths.
