Seeing In The Fog

We live by faith, not by sight.

2 Corinthians 5:7, NIV

I am almost breathless. God’s creation is spectacular! My “so excited face” is on right now as I am literally sitting in a cloud! No, I am not in an airplane. I am outside early in the morning, sitting on a balcony surrounded by mountains.

Just a minute ago I was gazing at the valley and small town below, getting ready to read my Bible while anticipating a slow and restful week with my family on summer vacation. I was gazing at the tops of the mountains and pieces of blue sky peeking between the clouds, wondering if it was going to rain. Then all of a sudden, I couldn’t see a thing! I was totally enveloped by a cloudy fog.

I cannot see the church steeple, cannot see the forest, cannot see one mountain peak because of the clouds surrounding me. But I can still hear. I hear the sound of a gushing waterfall. A few more seconds pass before it dawns on me that I cannot see God, either! But I know He is here just as sure as that mountain is sitting behind the cloud. Paradoxically, it is probably one of the clearest visual pictures I have had personally of what it means to walk by faith and not by sight!

“Lord, right now, my circumstances are a bit cloudy, and I do not know what is ahead, but I do know that You do. And as sure as those mountains are still behind the clouds, You are behind every cloudy circumstance in my life. You never leave, Lord.”

Our circumstances can change abruptly, without warning, and leave us feeling blinded about what to do next. Many times we cannot see what is behind our situation or what unknowns lie in front of us, but we can still hear God in His Word. I hear Him in this Bible beside me. I hear Him saying right now that one day my faith will become sight.

It’s okay that we cannot see God. We can hear Him and know that He is present with us because He says so over and over in His Word. Let’s pray now that He will help us trust Him so much that we find peace in the fog.
