Reminders

My child, never forget the things I have taught you. Store my commands in your heart. . . . Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder.

Are you as grateful for reminders as I am? There is so much going on in life with both work and family responsibilities that I need something to keep me on top of things. If I don’t jot down a note or send a text to myself, I’m sure to forget to pick up milk at the store or return a book I borrowed. Nowadays, we can even get phone or text reminders for our doctor and hair appointments! (I am definitely on overload since I forgot to make a hair appointment, which I really need!)

This may sound funny, but I even need a visual reminder to accessorize! I don’t want to forget to grab a cute accessory before I head out for the day. After so many years of being disappointed because I forgot to wear something pretty, I finally hung my necklaces on a cute rack that I can’t miss and put my watches on a dresser near the bedroom door. I simply grab something fun and go. No more wasting time trying to untangle a necklace or finding a coordinating timepiece!

When I slip on a necklace today, the verses above come to mind. I have never literally tied loyalty and kindness around my neck, but God knows how much I need to be reminded about the instructions in His Word.

We can be reminded to focus on Him in several ways. God longs for every believer to spend time reading His Word every day because we need reminders of His higher ways in our world that’s packed with many of the lowest-common-denominator distractions! We also are reminded of Him when we spend time with other believers. When we are all growing together, God’s Word is fresh on our hearts to encourage each other in this daily battle of life.

Let’s remind ourselves to add “time with God” to our list for the day.

Pick some kind of reminder method that works for you to prompt you to spend time with God each day. Maybe it’s a note on the fridge or a Post-it on the car dashboard or bathroom mirror. Maybe you’d even like to splurge and buy yourself a necklace that reminds you to be tied to God’s Word whenever you put it on. Whatever it takes, let’s keep His Word filling our hearts and minds.
