Put On God’s Armor

Put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. . . . Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News. . . . Hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Ephesians 6:13-17

What are you wearing today? Maybe it’s one of your favorite outfits or maybe it is the first thing you grabbed that didn’t need ironing. Some women, like me, enjoy creating new looks and shopping in their own closets to stay in touch with the current styles. But today’s verses focus on the real essentials needed to dress for success.

God’s wardrobe for us—His armor—may not seem to fit your fashion style, but we would be wise not to leave the house without it. This outerwear is actually our innerwear, protecting us from the enemy and helping us defend God’s truth and stand our ground. Here’s what’s included:

Belt of truth: Truth guards our core against the onslaught of misleading standards.

Body armor of righteousness: God’s righteousness covers our whole being.

Shoes of peace: The Good News gives us peace, and we can share the story of the Prince of Peace with others.

Shield of faith: Faith protects us like a shield over our heart, where Jesus resides when we have a relationship with Him.

Helmet of salvation: Jesus’ death secured our salvation, and when we focus on that fact, we don helmets of confidence for what lies ahead.

Sword of the Spirit: The Word of God is our only offensive piece of armor. When we carry the sword of the Spirit we’ll be ready to wage war against the enemy using the power of God’s Word.

As you dress each day, think of each piece of spiritual armor you’re putting on too. Then listen to what our Commander in Chief, Jesus, asks you to do and wear Him well!
