Part 1: Argument With A Teenager

Do everything without complaining and arguing.

Philippians 2:14

“Lord, I have never been a mother of a teenager until now! Are you sure you picked the right person for this? Where did my Christlike attitude go? How long have I been walking with You? Didn’t I just spend time in Your Word? Who is supposed to be the wise, godly adult in this situation?”

That was my prayer after arguing with my daughter while she was home from college one spring break. I felt awful after she returned to school, so after I prayed I wrote her a two-page letter in an effort to clear the air between us.

Writing out my feelings and remorse was cleansing, but I still have much to learn about relationships and working through conflict. I’m thankful that at least I know who I want to learn from—the God who knows me inside and out!

After confessing to the Lord, I took responsibility for how I had wronged Kali. I wanted to make sure I did not miss an opportunity for the two of us to learn God’s best restoration method together. I knew as I wrote it that the letter was much more for me than it was for her. I put my heart to paper, which I share with you as tomorrow’s devotion.

In all honesty, part of me did not want to humble myself, but it was so uncomfortable to be stuck in my pride. Wouldn’t you know, the wildest thing happened when I went to the One Year Bible reading for the very date I wrote my letter. The Old Testament reading included Numbers 20:12-13, the story of Moses’ punishment for disobeying God by striking the rock.

I had no idea the story took place at the waters of Meribah, which means “arguing”! I wanted to shout, “Lord, You are so personal! You love me, and You see my disappointment in myself and my shame. Thank You that You have forgiven me and do not treat me as my sins deserve when I strike the rock.”

“Thank You, Lord, for Your good plan: ‘Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed’ (James 5:16).” Is there something you need to confess to Him right now?
