Parched And Weary

Parched and Weary

O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water.

Psalm 63:1

Parched, weary, and thirsty. David was hiding in a desolate wilderness when he penned Psalm 63. He was in the wilderness of Judah, on the run from his rebellious son Absalom, who was trying to kill him.

I cannot imagine that particular wilderness situation, but I know what it feels like to be so thirsty that nothing will quench it but good ole H2O! Most of us don’t have to stay thirsty very long. We can quickly quench our physical thirst. But when it comes to soul thirst, nothing will satisfy it but Jesus, our Living Water!

When we’re in a “parched and weary” situation—the kind of wilderness experience that seems like it will never end, with circumstances that make us crave relief for ourselves or for those we love—we don’t know how much longer we can last in the desert and wonder if help will ever arrive. Only the Lord Himself can meet us with His life-giving water and satisfy our deepest needs.

Let’s look at David’s Living Water bottle of relief that’s found in Psalm 63:

  • Seek God. (verse 1)
  • Tell God we long for Him. (verse 1)
  • Remember good experiences with God and God’s power and glory. (verse 2)
  • Praise God for His unfailing love. (verses 3-4)
  • Compliment God and praise Him some more. (verse 5)
  • Think about God when we can’t sleep. (verse 6)
  • Remember God is our keeper and sing for joy. (verse 7)
  • Follow Him closely and recognize that His strong hand holds us securely. (verse 8)
  • Turn all the bad guys over to God. (verses 9-10)
  • Rejoice in Him and show your trust by praising Him. (verse 11)

Talk about an energizing drink! Drink Him in and then fill up again. You will be renewed and refreshed by all that He offers.
