Never Ever Die

Jesus told [Sweet Martha], “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?”

John 11:25-26

“Do you believe this, ________________________?” (Put your name in the blank.)

“Do you believe this, Kim?”

“Yes! I believe it, Lord, even though it seems that death is all around me these days!” Death is a sad loss for us on earth, whether we physically lose someone we love, or someone we care about is grieving a loss.

This past summer I hired an older gentleman to paint a room in my home. The advertisement on his van read “Airless Jordan, Airless Spray Painting—High Quality Paint Job with a Down-to-Earth Price.” When I mentioned how clever his sign was, Ron Jordan explained, “I wanted some words to attract people’s attention.” He certainly had mine.

“How long have you been in the painting business?” I asked.

“Not long.”

His explanation surprised me. He had been a funeral director in a small town for a long time. He was always on call, 365 days a year, even having to cut a family vacation short once to come home and ready someone for burial. “You were a mortician and arranger, responsible for everything?” I could not even imagine! He said he had to do it all because there was no one else to do it, and death happens. But after many years, he decided to switch careers. Needless to say, I was a bit fascinated to have a “mortician turned painter” in my home!

Those who know the Lord as Savior can view death with hope and eternal anticipation because we have the promise of eternal life. It’s true that our mortal bodies will die, but our souls will not miss a beat. One day we’ll be “airless” on earth but forever with the Lord if we have trusted in Christ.

Spend some time considering your relationship with God in Christ. Is it settled? Think about the first seconds after your physical body dies. Sure, there are unknowns about how and when that will happen. But purposefully choose to anticipate meeting Jesus in person, hearing His heartbeat when He pulls you close.
