Lukewarm? No, Thank You

I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!

Revelation 3:15-16

For months the faucet on my kitchen sink would only dispense lukewarm water. No matter how far I turned it to the right or to the left, it was still lukewarm. It bugged me at first. But now that I look back, it is amazing how quickly I adapted, put off its repair, and decided to tackle bigger issues in our home.

All it took for a temperature change was a visit from my mother! The faucet just about drove her crazy. No lukewarm water for her—she needed hot or cold! I called the plumber.

Just as my mother didn’t care for lukewarm water, God is not pleased with lukewarm believers. This was His message to the church in Laodicea, written in Revelation, the last book of the Bible. Even though there is much mystery about Revelation, even among godly Bible scholars, there is also much we can learn and take to heart from this book.

As faulty human beings, the faucet on our hearts begins to pump out only lukewarm faith when we don’t keep going to God for maintenance. Oh, how we need to call upon Him, our Plumber, our Healer, our Provider, our Source of love, joy, peace, and comfort.

We do not want to be lukewarm Christians, but many times we cool off in our relationship with Him. This blasé temperature does not bring glory to God.

A lukewarm faucet may be tolerable, but lukewarm faith definitely must be dealt with. Let’s not live with a lukewarm faith. No, thank you!

Ask God to help reset your love and zeal for Him. Then trust Him to help you pay attention to His perpetual maintenance plan.
