Ittle Hairy

The grass withers and the flowers fade beneath the breath of the LORD. And so it is with people. The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever.

Isaiah 40:7-8

This passage always reminds me of a certain gift from a very sweet and funny friend named Lee. We have decorated the Sweet Monday office with all the fun packages she sends! I am always tickled pink whenever I receive one of her surprise gifts.

One particular package contained what our family fondly named “Little Hairy.” He was a bald, potato head–looking contraption that we put in our kitchen window and watered every day. Pretty soon, green grass sprouted from Little Hairy’s scalp, and before long he had enough green-sprout hair to make ponytails, which our daughter enjoyed creating.

But then we went away for a family vacation and did not bother asking our sweet neighbor Robin to water Little Hairy. When we arrived home, Little Hairy had turned completely gray, dry, and brittle, and he showed no signs of life.

His sorry condition reminded me of this verse in the Bible about grass withering but God’s Word standing forever.

The prophet Isaiah was comforting God’s people, Israel, by telling them that the Word of the Lord is always alive and never fades. God’s Word is self-watering, and He never takes a vacation from us! He is always ready to nourish us with His truth. As we grow older and our physical bodies fade like the temporary flowers and grass on earth, our spirits can grow richer and more fertile if we spend time filling ourselves with His nourishment that never runs dry.

Let’s water ourselves daily with God’s Word! Compare today’s verse with the message of Psalm 1:3 and John 15:4. Let’s think about the fact that healthy things grow, then make sure we’re doing our part to feed ourselves with God’s Word so our spiritual health doesn’t fade like our hair color but grows stronger.
