Hurry Worries

Paul had decided to sail on past Ephesus, for he didn’t want to spend any more time in the province of Asia. He was hurrying to get to Jerusalem, if possible, in time for the Festival of Pentecost.

Acts 20:16

The word that catches my attention in this verse is hurrying. The apostle Paul was trying to meet a deadline and had to travel as fast as possible. I feel his pain of possibly being late for some precious person or event. I truly take heart that someone like Paul, whom I admire for his incredible faith, actually experienced anxious human moments like I often do! What a great reminder to all of us that we need to place our hurry worries in God’s hands.

I can relate to that human hurry, especially when I give myself too much to do in too little time. Most of us can relate to suffering, too—maybe not in as dramatic a fashion as what Paul endured, but suffering nonetheless. Yet Paul stayed true to the One who had transformed his heart and sustained him through his three missionary journeys with His power.

No matter how hurried we find ourselves, we can rest assured that God’s timing will always be right for accomplishing His plans in our lives. He never gets behind, never overschedules, never feels panicked. He moves quickly, whether it is for the purpose of coming to our aid or opening or closing doors. His timing and sovereignty are perfect. His reign over our lives is not only comforting but brings us confidence in Christ. We can relax our hurried hearts and catch our breath in Him.

“Lord, I am so human! I get caught up in the rush more times than I’d like to admit. Please slow my racing heart and mind so that I can see Your timing and goals for me.” By the way, Acts 21:17 says, “When we arrived, the brothers and sisters in Jerusalem welcomed us warmly.” Paul made it in time!
