Getting Rid Of Junk

Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

2 Corinthians 5:17

A few years ago, I was gazing out my kitchen window at the worn secondhand swing set and the neighbor’s discarded tree house that had landed in our backyard as a playhouse years earlier. Many sweet memories were made on those play things. But our tall teenage daughter could barely fit on the small swings anymore. She had outgrown them years before, so it was time to put nostalgia aside and get rid of this “junk” taking up room in our backyard. But who would I call to haul it away?

Then I remembered a postcard advertising 1-800-GOTJUNK. I called immediately, before I had time to chicken out. They said they could come out and give me an estimate for tearing the items down, packing them on their truck, and disposing of them. The cost would be based on how much space the debris took up on their truck. What was there to lose?

Their estimate was reasonable, and within an hour’s time they had dismantled everything and completely removed all debris from our yard. I was ecstatic, and Mark was spared wrestling with a big to-do item that was now erased from his list. It saved a lot of sore backs and necks, and precious time.

This experience prompted me to think about Jesus. On a spiritual level we can always make a free call to 1-800-GOTJESUS. The sin junking up our hearts is more damaging than any earthly junk we may accumulate. Our sin mess is why Jesus Christ came to this earth—to die for our sins and clean us up so that we could enjoy a personal relationship with God now and forever. He created us as His masterpieces, not junk, and He wants us to spend eternity with Him where there won’t be any sliver of junk around!

Celebrate in Christ if the “old you” is gone and the “new you” has come! And if you have never called 1-800-GOTJESUS, call Him now in prayer and ask Him to take your sin away.
