Eternal Inheritance

For you have heard my vows, O God. You have given me an inheritance reserved for those who fear your name.

Psalm 61:5

I am comforted to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that nothing this side of heaven can interfere with the solid inheritance awaiting me in heaven. Death can’t; crisis can’t. The stock market can’t, and no election or hurricane or even my own personal tsunamis of life can interfere with what Jesus and I have together.

You and I cannot lose anything in Christ. He is all gain, and what we receive when we meet Him face to face one day will be far grander than you and I could ever dream about.

Closing my parents’ home after their deaths was sad for my family. My siblings and I were surrounded by so many memories. All of us live in different states, and for years we had gathered at my parents’ home almost every holiday. Being together again without Mom and Dad and sorting through my folks’ things was one of the most difficult tasks I have ever tackled.

My kind older brother, Ryan, handled the rigmarole of legal issues. My sweet younger sister, Shawn, who grew up in our parents’ home while I was in college and who married a man from the same town, went the extra mile in organizing our parents’ beautiful home to sell. Since I lived the farthest away, I could only help with the smaller things. We are all so different in our family, yet the hard process went about as well as I could imagine. Besides the pain of not seeing or hearing my dear parents’ voices, the most difficult part for me was packing and deciding what to do with Mom and Dad’s earthly treasures. Thank goodness Mama had diligently started purging before we went through this grueling process.

I took comfort in God’s promises. The fact of eternity and our real inheritance can frame our attitudes toward temporal treasures. As meaningful as they can be for each one of us, God can use them to develop our eternal perspective. It can create a longing for what will really last in this world and our forever home in heaven.

Make sure that your inheritance is reserved in heaven in Christ. Plant Psalm 61:5 in your heart and trust that God will help you rest on His truth.
