Dreams I Wanted To Keep

Dreams I Wanted to Keep

I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night.

Psalm 63:6

I agree with David’s words in this psalm. There have been many nights when my restless mind has been calmed by thinking about God. It seems fitting to spend time thinking of our Creator as often as we can.

One middle-school morning, my daughter was really hard to awaken from sweet slumber. I tried my usual wake-up song (which is a slight variation from the original)—“Good morning, good morning, you slept the whole night through; good morning, good morning to you”—but it wasn’t doing the trick.

When she finally opened her eyes, I asked her why she was a real sleepyhead this particular morning. Her answer melted my heart. “I was having dreams I wanted to keep.”

Dreams I Wanted to Keep sounded like a great book title to me! Later in the day, I pondered the words. A personal relationship with the God of the whole universe is not a dream. It is a reality. When we awaken every morning surrounded by the Lord’s presence in this earthly life, our connection with Him is “for keeps”—now and for all eternity.

Jesus Christ’s Holy Spirit is our constant companion who lives inside every believer. We can live in hopeful anticipation of seeing His face when He calls us home to heaven. In the meantime, we must carry His truths close to our hearts and meditate on them always, day and night.

To be honest, Jesus is the greatest dream come true and the most precious One we can keep and offer to others.

When we wake up in the morning, let’s thank the Lord Jesus Christ that He is not a dream! He is “for keeps” now and forever!
