Clinging To Him

Clinging to Him

I cling to you; your strong right hand holds me securely.

Psalm 63:8

I have already confessed that I suffer from an incurable habit of space invasion in my devotion “Confessions of a Leaner” (see page 21). I have always liked to sit close to people—shoulder-to-shoulder, elbow-to-elbow. Even when walking down the street while shopping with my daughter or girlfriends, I tend to move into their personal space without realizing that I am sometimes too close for their comfort! But thankfully, we always end up laughing about this habit of mine!

Isn’t it wonderful that God wants us to sit close to Him? We can never get too close for His comfort. Not only does He want us to stay close whether we’re sitting or walking or running through life together, but He tells us to cling to Him—to tailgate, hang on, piggyback, however you want to express it—to never let go, ever! He does not want us to drop His hand.

I love to visualize sticking so close to Him that no one can squeeze between us—because we are tight! What an absolutely fabulous ride to live life clinging to a strong and loving Father who never shrugs us off or nudges us out of His way. I long to cling to Him so I will not skip off the path or take a detour; I don’t want to miss a stop on His personal journey for me, not even for a second. His way is the best way. He is always in the lead, and He ensures that the stops He makes are only for my good. Even if the stop does not appear inviting to me, He is still there, helping me see that He will bring good from the experience. Clinging to Him, I will never be lost or alone.

If you are unsure whether you are connected to God, He is ready and willing to take your hand and pull you close. It’s your move to put yourself in His big hand every day and never let go.

Let’s cling to Christ! We can start by making James 4:8 (NIV) our verse today: “Come near to God and he will come near to you.”
