Bright Light

You are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

1 Peter 2:9

Wonderful light! As I mentioned in an earlier devotion, no forty- or sixty-watt lightbulbs for me! Bright lightbulbs have been a staple for me since my college days. I love the right lampshades, too—those that allow plenty of light to shine through. In fact, I just changed two black shades to white ones for that very reason. I like light so much that I keep little white lights around the inside of most windows in the back of our home year round. My sweet neighbor Muriel says she enjoys them too.

Maybe like me, you enjoy driving through the neighborhood at Christmas to see the lights. Some homes are ablaze with thousands of them. I pretend all those bulbs are birthday candles for Jesus!

One of the reasons I’m a light lover is because Jesus is too. Actually, He calls Himself the Light of the World. When we have a personal relationship with Him, Jesus is forever our ultra-watt, bright and perfect Light who never needs replacing! He never fades or flickers during life’s storms. He doesn’t rely on unpredictable electricity sources—He is His own strong and unchanging power source with infinite wattage.

He chooses us to shine His light far and wide. When we belong to Him, we are chosen, holy lightbulbs that come in all shapes and sizes. He supplies the current, and we carry that current out to a world that longs to be rescued from darkness. That’s definitely worth singing His praises.

Each day when we plug into Him, His glow will shine through us. When we complain and argue and do not choose to give thanks in all circumstances, our spiritual lightbulbs dim. But when we live our days in praise, our lights shine brilliantly in Christ!

Let’s shine on by declaring His praises! We are free from darkness forever in Jesus Christ—our wonderful Light! Write Ephesians 5:8 on a card to hang among the lights on your Christmas tree as a reminder of who you are as a follower of Christ.
