Affecting Future Generations

I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.

Exodus 20:6

I love this verse. I love its truth for my family and, Lord willing, future generations of descendants. It gives me hope that my life of faith will bless them, despite my mistakes and flaws.

Another reason I love today’s verse is because God is explaining that His merciful love toward His own extends to hundreds of generations. Therefore, when I don’t hold my tongue but allow my words to hurt the people I love the most, I can rest in the knowledge that God loves to forgive and renew. His mercy to me will resound for decades to come.

God’s desire to lavish His forgiveness on so many reveals the depth of His love for us. I think it is easier to recognize God’s steadfast, forgiving Spirit when I do not have a steadfast spirit. In my humbled state, I long for what the Forgiver offers.

I was less than loving last night when I got home from a long, fruitful day. I was tired, and it didn’t take long for my steadfast spirit to go right out the window. (You should know by now that I’m not a night owl but an early-morning girl.) I said some harsh words; in short, I was not sweet! I know that when my mood deteriorates like it did, the first people I unload on are my husband and daughter.

Naturally, I regret my attitude at home with my family, perhaps even more than I regret other sin. My family takes priority. I want to serve them in a way that pleases God. I take seriously the fact that more is “caught” than “taught” about faith by those around me as well as my descendants. I’m especially grateful that God’s love covers a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8). Because I am His, His love to my family outweighs my shortcomings.

Let’s commit to pray for those who come after us, whether they are in our families or are people we mentor or tell about our faith in Christ.
