A Cushioning Rock

Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken.

Psalm 62:5-6

I read about a traveling man who always packed his breakable bottles inside his socks and then put them into a plastic bag inside his suitcase before going on a trip. In case the bottles broke, the socks would provide cushioning, and the bag would contain the mess. What a great idea!

You and I really love the cushions and protections in our lives, and not just for travel. Just think how many pillow styles we can choose from to cushion our heads at bedtime, or stadium seats to make the hard bleachers at ball games more comfortable to sit on. Add a warm blanket to wrap around us as a cozy shield, and we’re ready to handle any of the elements. And think how theater seats and church pews have changed over the years—bigger, softer, more luxurious. We’re all about comfort, aren’t we?

Don’t you wish you could wear an invisible sock or a cushion around you on difficult days? Or maybe you’d prefer having a rock wall around you for protection. Sometimes life seems to deal blow after blow, and we all need protection and comfort when our heart is breaking. We long for the people we love to have that too.

It’s a great security to know that believers in Christ have both a Comforter and a Cushioner! The Lord is a cushion to absorb life’s heartaches, a blanket to shield us, and a rock of protection and security. Psalm 62:6 and 1 Corinthians 10:4 refer to Christ as a rock, and Psalm 91 is loaded with symbolism of our security in Christ. In the first four verses alone, the psalmist calls God a shelter, refuge, place of safety, armor, and protection. Like a shield, “He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection” (Psalm 91:4).

Jesus Christ is the most versatile cushion of all because He is strong, immovable, constant, and comforting all in one.

Treat yourself to a decorative pillow or a new pair of socks. Every time you use your cushion, remember that your constant cushion is Jesus, the Solid Rock!
