God's Coaching #291

When siblings work together, they can accomplish amazing things—even a world record. In 2010, siblings Jason Chalmers and Tamlyn Locke set a Guinness World Record for greatest distance traveled on a scooter in 24 hours. That may not seem like much of a sport. After all, all they had to do was turn their wrists and hold down the accelerators. But when you consider the amount of endurance and concentration it took to go 735.5 miles in 24 hours, you have to agree these siblings displayed a lot of skill and ability.

The pair started off in Johannesburg, South Africa, and headed south on the N1, which is the national highway. With cars zooming past them, Jason and Tamlyn kept up speeds of around 45 miles per hour—the top speed for a scooter. Two vehicles traveled next to the siblings to keep them safe and to give them support and instructions. The vehicle in front filmed the journey. The vehicle behind cautioned other drivers about the slow-moving scooters. Jason and Tamlyn stopped every couple of hours to refuel the scooters and let the engines cool.

What’s the Score?

Jason and Tamlyn never could have set a world record without their support team in the vehicles that drove ahead of and behind them. The people in these other cars watched over them, kept them safe, and gave them advice.

In our Christian lives, we have a support team that does the same thing for us—the Holy Spirit. When we pray to accept Jesus, God sends the Holy Spirit into our lives. Some people call him the Holy Ghost. But he’s not spooky at all; he’s actually really cool. God’s Spirit can warn us about dangers coming from behind or decisions we’re going to make that could affect our future. Do you ever feel that little nudge in your heart to do the right thing when you’re about to make a poor decision? That nudge or “voice” whispering in your ear to follow God’s Word comes from the Holy Spirit. The Spirit watches over us, keeps us safe, and gives us advice. In the Bible, Jesus said the Holy Spirit could also teach us about God and remind us of his teachings.

On the Ball

Thank God for sending the Holy Spirit. Isn’t it great to have such an amazing helper in your life? Listen for his voice inside today.

Coach’s Comment

When the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. John 14:26
