What will you be remembered for? Freddy Schuman will be remembered as a great New York Yankees fan. For 22 years, people could count on Freddy to walk around Yankee Stadium banging a spoon against a frying pan to cheer on his favorite team. On this day in 2010, Freddy passed away at age 85.

Freddy became famous for his passion about the Yankees. People looked forward to hearing him walk around the ballpark banging on his pan. Plus, he always created encouraging signs on white poster board. At the top of each sign, he wrote, “Freddy ‘Sez.’” That’s what people called him: Freddy Sez. His comments were usually positive. One of his signs read, “Freddy ‘Sez’ Yankees have great come from behind ability.” Another said, “Freddy ‘Sez’ Yankee Stadium gave birth to champions!”

What’s the Score?

The New York Yankees gave Freddy plenty to cheer about. During his time at the stadium, the Yankees won five World Series championships—more than any other team in baseball. Plus, they were almost always in the play-offs.

The Yankees may be good, but we’re on a better team: God’s team. If Freddy could get excited and be committed to cheering on the Yankees, how should we be cheering for God, the ultimate victor? Would putting on face paint and cheering for Jesus be too much? Probably not. He deserves that kind of excitement and passion. The Bible says we are Christ’s ambassadors. That means we represent him as members of his team. When people look at us, they should know we’re committed to God. (And not because we’re walking around in a “God Rules” jacket.) Maybe our joy makes us stand out. Perhaps it’s our kindness that shows we’re on God’s team.

As you live your life, keep this question in mind: What will you be remembered for? Freddy was a great Yankees fan. Will you act like God’s biggest fan?

On the Ball

Can people tell what team you’re on? Make sure people see how excited you are to be on God’s team. You don’t have to walk around banging on a frying pan, but making a sign to tell others about Jesus may not be a bad idea.
