In What Will You Put Your Trust?

Some trust in chariots and some in horses,

but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. Psalm 20:7, ESV

IT WOULD HAVE BEEN perfectly natural for the king of Israel to put his trust in the size and capabilities of his standing army. That’s the way life worked in his day. But David was determined to turn to a completely different source of security. Rather than relying on human ability, he was determined to trust in God alone.

Similarly, it is perfectly natural for parents today who are concerned about their children to put their trust in many things that seem to offer security. Parents put their trust in good neighborhoods and good schools, good experiences and good examples, good health and good opportunities. On top of that, they rely on their own efforts at good parenting.

So where will you put your trust? At the heart of what it means to follow God is to make him the center and source of our security. We no longer depend on worldly defenses and safeguards. Our child’s future does not depend on the protection, opportunities, or oversight we can provide. We trust in the name of the Lord our God.

Instead of trusting in savings accounts and insurance policies, we trust the God who provides for his own. Instead of trusting in health regimens and safety precautions, we trust in the God who protects his own. Instead of trusting in our own plans and dreams, we trust in the God who preordains every day of our lives. Instead of trusting in what we can achieve or what our kids can achieve, we trust in what Christ has accomplished on our behalf.

Lord, so many things falsely promise security. But the only true and lasting security in this uncertain world is Christ. So help me, Lord, when I am tempted to put my hope and confidence in what may seem promising but is ultimately unstable. Keep calling me back to trust you with everything about ________’s life.
