Bible Blast: Read Proverbs 26:21-23
Rumors are dainty morsels that sink deep into one’s heart.
Proverbs 26:22
What is your favorite snack in the world? Do you love chips and salsa? How about ice cream? Or maybe you love chowing down on raw veggies?
A snack that most people can’t resist is chocolate chip cookies! Sometimes it seems like we bake about three batches a week in my house! The funny thing is, this favorite snack was created totally by accident.
In the 1930s, Ruth and Kenneth Wakefield owned a little hotel in Massachusetts called the “Toll House Inn.” Ruth enjoyed cooking homemade food for the guests who stayed there. One night she was baking butter cookies and thought it would be good to make them all chocolate instead. All she had was a bar of Nestlé chocolate, so she cut it up into tiny bits and stirred them into the cookie dough. She assumed that when the chocolate melted, it would make the entire cookies chocolate, but the chocolate bits just melted a little and made a wonderfully good cookie that Ruth’s guests ended up liking very much. In fact, people began coming to the inn just to sample Ruth’s “Toll House Cookies.”
Ruth made a business deal with the Nestlé company. They printed her recipe on the back of their chocolate bars, and she got all the chocolate she wanted to make more delicious cookies at the Toll House Inn. This was before chocolate chips were invented, so Nestlé included a small chopper to help people make their bars into chips for the cookie recipe. In 1939 Nestlé began selling bags of chocolate chips.
Like it says in Proverbs 26:22, rumors and gossip are like those chocolate chips. The words of gossip go right into a person’s heart. Rumors can hurt a person so deeply. You know that saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”? That’s so not true! Words can hurt much more deeply than a bruise.
Let your words be morsels that nourish and strengthen people rather than tearing them down.
Girl Gab: What a great day to make chocolate chip cookies! Plan a time when you and your mom can make them together. Maybe you could even talk her into letting your family have milk and cookies for dinner—just this once!
