You Can Do It!

Bible Blast: Read Genesis 21:1-7

All glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Ephesians 3:20

Recently, I learned about a man from New Zealand named Craig Marsh. He was in great pain and had to have surgery on his stomach.The surgeons discovered a horrible cancer. Eventually, Craig had to have so many stomach surgeries, he couldn’t digest food properly. Eating was painful so he ate as little as possible. Soon he began wasting away. He was not expected to live long.

One day, some men gathered around Craig and began to pray for him. For many hours they prayed, while Craig lay on the floor with his stomach making strange noises. Then, suddenly he was hungry. That was the first miracle. You see, his stomach no longer produced the acid that makes a person feel hungry. Craig had not felt hunger for months. His friends took him to eat. Only a few hours later, Craig wanted to eat again—and again and again and again. Doctors were amazed, and they are still perplexed. It’s been more than a decade since God healed Craig, whose stomach functions as if it were totally normal. God can do anything.

The Bible is full of stories about God doing amazing things. For instance, God made Abraham a father at the age of one hundred! That was a miracle. It’s a greater miracle that he made Sarah’s body function properly to produce a child when she was ninety! Every single baby born is a beautiful work of God, but creating a baby with two old bodies is a miracle!

Abraham and Sarah’s miracle didn’t stop with having the baby. Next they had to raise the baby as old parents. In obedience, they did it through the strength that God offered to them.

Doing the impossible is God’s everyday business. Big, impossible things don’t seem too difficult when you consider that you can do “everything” through Christ’s strength. What difficult thing do you need to do?

Girl Gab: Mom, can you recall a miracle that you’ve witnessed or heard about? Tell your daughter about it. Daughter, it is said that someone who has never seen a flower would think a dandelion was a great miracle. Go find a flower or plant, and bring it to your mom. Study it, and discuss how it recalls a miracle of God’s creation.
