The Ultimate Promise Keeper

Bible Blast: Read Genesis 17:15-19

The LORD kept his word and did for Sarah exactly what he had promised. Genesis 21:1

Today in America many people have children or at least want to have children. However, there are a good many people who remain childless. Sometimes couples choose never to have a child, but often a husband and wife find themselves unable to have a baby. This is called being “barren.”

When a woman is barren, something in her body isn’t allowing her to have a baby. This can be devastating news to a hopeful couple. There’s a really good chance that your family knows someone who desperately wants a baby but can’t have one. It’s good for you to pray for them.Take a moment to ask God to bless them with a healthy child.

When God told Abraham, as recorded in Genesis 15:5, “Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can. That’s how many descendants you will have,” Abraham was encouraged because, up until that point, he and his wife, Sarah, weren’t able to have children though they desperately wanted them.

Genesis 17 records God’s covenant promise that he would give Abraham and Sarah many descendants. But a lot of time had gone by since the first promise from God. Do you know what Abraham’s response was? It’s in verse 17: “Then Abraham bowed down to the ground, but he laughed to himself in disbelief. ‘How could I become a father at the age of 100?’ he thought. ‘And how can Sarah have a baby when she is ninety years old?’”

Okay. Abraham was a hundred years old and his wife was ninety years old! No wonder Abraham laughed. Of course, about a year later Sarah gave birth to a son, Isaac, and ultimately Abraham’s descendants did outnumber the stars in the sky, just like God said.

Not everyone who prays for her own baby receives one like Sarah did, and I don’t know why that is. God has personal plans for each wife and husband. But you can pray for people who are longing for and waiting for children.
