The Armor of God: Sword of the Spirit

Bible Blast: Read Hebrews 4:12-13

Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Ephesians 6:17

Have you seen the Disney animated movie Sleeping Beauty? Before the prince entered into battle against the evil Maleficent (who turns into a ginormous dragon), one of the little fairies gave him two things: a Shield of Virtue and a Sword of Truth. She said, “The road to true love may be barriered by still many more dangers, which you alone will have to face. So arm thyself with this enchanted Shield of Virtue, and this mighty Sword of Truth, for these Weapons of Righteousness will triumph over evil.”

When the prince was in the heat of battle, he finally threw his sword at the dragon’s chest as the fairy said, “Sword of Truth, fly swift and sure, that evil die and good endure.” And, of course, the dragon is destroyed, the prince kisses the sleeping Aurora, and they live happily ever after.

I know Sleeping Beauty is just a fairy tale, but I love the symbolism of it. It’s always good to be reminded that good triumphs over evil.

The Sword of the Spirit is literally God’s Word. Every word God speaks or has had written down is like an offensive weapon that can damage the enemy. When you feel attacked by sadness or anger, grab your Bible and speak out some truth. It’s easy to do; you just “rewrite” a Bible verse into a prayer. When God’s Word says, “God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline” (2 Timothy 1:7), you could pray, “God, I know this fear is not from you. Give me power, love, and a mind at ease. In Jesus’ name, Amen.” The Bible is a weapon God has given you, so you know it’s perfect and strong enough for the task.

As you grow in your knowledge of God’s Word and in the ability to hear his voice, you’ll realize the amazing power you have when you wave that sword around. So grab onto the handle and hold it high! You’re a mighty warrior!

Girl Gab: Mom, if it’s okay with you, have your daughter open her Bible to the title page where it says “Holy Bible” and have her write “The Sword of the Spirit” under it. Now take time to put on the whole armor of God. Together with your daughter, symbolically put on each piece as you read through Ephesians 6. Pray that God would help you both be faithful warriors for his Kingdom.
