Looking for a new vacation spot?

The Cook Islands are located south of Hawaii and experience warm, sunny weather all year round. One of the islands, Rarotonga, is becoming more popular for tourists. Rarotonga is only twenty miles around the whole island! In spite of Rarotonga’s size, it does have an international airport with a runway right along the water. When you step off your plane and into the airport, you’ll hear singing.

There’s a man who plays a ukulele and sings songs for every arriving flight at the Rarotonga airport. After such long journeys, passengers find the man’s song quite welcoming.

This may not seem terribly unusual until you know one more piece of information. Many of the flights arrive at the airport in the middle of the night. Even if your plane lands at 2:30 a.m., that man will be warmly greeting you with a song.

He’s not famously known for his singing. Most people probably don’t stop to ask him for his name or autograph. When his music fills the airport in the middle of the night, he’s not getting a standing ovation. He’s just doing something he really enjoys, no matter who the audience is.

Humility is something Jesus spoke about often. In Luke 14, he urged the people not to assume that they would be honored by others: “Don’t take a seat of honor at the head of the table, because you might be asked to move.” It certainly would be better just to sit somewhere unnoticed and have someone else move you to a more honored seat, wouldn’t it?

You may be hearing a lot of messages in the world around you about “making it big.” If God chooses to make somebody’s name famous, that’s a great blessing and a big responsibility, but you should never make becoming famous your goal. Make Jesus’ name famous above all else everywhere you go, no matter what you do. Let him be the one to move you to a seat of honor, if that’s what he wants to do. Otherwise, be content to sit on the floor and enjoy using your gifts for God’s glory.
