Strong Tower

Bible Blast: Read 2 Samuel 22:1-4

The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe. Proverbs 18:10 (NIV)

The CN Tower is the world’s tallest tower. Located in Toronto, Canada, it is 1,815 feet high. (The world’s tallest building is in Dubai.) Anyway, back to the tower. Since the average American house is about eighteen feet tall to the eaves, you’d have to stack most houses one hundred high to have a building as tall as the CN Tower.

A few years ago, my husband, Bob, and I had an extra day to spend in Toronto, and we made sure to visit the observation deck of the CN Tower. When you’re up there, you are so high that you can see one hundred miles—all the way to Niagara Falls and into New York state on a clear day! We were not there on a clear day. In fact, we went at night in the middle of a storm that turned ugly. By the time we got to the observation deck, the officials were closing it because of high winds, thunder, and lightning. I felt a little bit afraid, but I was assured by one of the tour guides that we were incredibly safe. In fact, she told us we were safer in the tower than on the ground because of the lightning.

“The tower gets hit by lightning about seventy-five times a year,” she said. “But we never even feel it. Trust me, if you were on the ground, you’d feel it! But this tower was built to absorb the shock and send it through the ground. It’s safe.” She went on to explain that the winds were so high that the tower was swaying with the wind; it was designed to do this to improve the building’s safety.

“If you were on the ground right now, you’d be inside because these winds are dangerous.” Sure enough, we got down to the ground, where the storm was worse. The officials wouldn’t even let us go outside down there because it wasn’t safe.

Inside the tower, we were safe. Outside, we were not.

The writer of Proverbs calls God a strong tower. The strength of his protection never gets weaker, even if there’s a gigantic storm going on. Just like the CN Tower, safety isn’t found on the ground. It’s always safest up in God’s tower.
