Bible Blast: Read Mark 13:22-23

I sure am glad for one man in Hawaii who had a runny nose and scratchy eyes every time he was near a dog. You see, he’s the reason I have my lovable dog, Stormie! In 1988, Wally Cochran of the Royal Guide Dogs organization in Victoria, Australia, got a request from a blind woman living in Hawaii. She needed a guide dog that wouldn’t aggravate her husband’s allergies. Wally asked the manager of the Royal Guide Dogs about crossing one of their Labrador retrievers with a standard poodle. He agreed, and so the first labradoodles were bred. And guess what? “Mr. Allergy” had no reaction!

The result of the crossbreed was adorable—not to mention clean because the dogs don’t shed and are practically allergen free. “Labradoodle Fever” soon hit Australia and spread farther and farther until it hit the Gresh family five years ago, giving us Stormie.

But the Labradoodle craze created a situation in which all sorts of poodles were being bred to just any Labrador. The result has been a lot of hairy houses and a lot of itchy eyes.

God tells you and me to “be careful” when we hear people speaking about Christ. On the outside, they might look, act, and sound like “prophets” of God, but they may actually be false prophets—like those fake Labradoodles who look just as cute and cuddly, but don’t have the right genetics inside of them to be legitimate.

When someone says he or she has a message from God for you, always check it with Scripture. If you hear a teaching or read a book, make sure what you’re learning is truth, not some twisted version of the truth.

Remember that 1 Samuel 16:7 says God doesn’t look at the outward appearance. He looks at the heart. Ask God to help you see the heart behind what people say. If there’s truth, apply it to your life. If there’s something untrue, just toss it aside. Don’t be fooled by “crazy prophet-doodles!”
