Sometimes Dogs Are Gross

Bible Blast: Read Romans 7:21-25

As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his foolishness.

Proverbs 26:11

Can you believe this verse is in the Bible? If you’re weak stomached, don’t worry. We’ll get the gross stuff out of the way first.

God has designed our bodies so perfectly. When there’s something stuck in our throats, we cough to clear it out. When an eyelash gets stuck in our eyes, we automatically produce tears that flush it out. And when we eat something that’s harmful to our bodies, our intestines start contracting and, well, out it comes. It’s yucky but amazing!

As much as I hate getting sick, I’m always impressed at how much better I feel after throwing up. However, I don’t think dogs have that same thought process after they vomit. You see, after a dog vomits, it’ll walk right back over to the vomit and . . . eat it! Disgusting! Why would a dog get rid of whatever is making it sick and then go put it right back into its body again? That doesn’t make any sense.

The Bible says that when a “fool repeats his foolishness,” he’s doing the same thing that dogs do. Let me tell you a little story that shows what this verse means.

Caroline had good friends, but she really wanted to be friends with Sophia. Sophia was pretty and cool and lived in a really big house, but Sophia was mean. Whenever Caroline talked to her, Sophia would say things to her like, “You need to get new shoes so you don’t look poor” or “I can’t believe you ride the bus to school. My nanny drives me.” Caroline always felt terrible after she spent time with Sophia, but she kept going back to her. This is a good example of a fool repeating her foolishness.

Caroline knew that Sophia made her feel awful about herself and her family, but she kept trying to earn her friendship. Do you see how that’s like a dog returning to its vomit? If something or someone makes you feel unhealthy, physically or in your mind, don’t go back to it! Go somewhere else.
