God’s Breath

Bible Blast: Read Genesis 2:4-7

The LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. Genesis 2:7 (NIV)

Do you know how many breaths you take during a day? Let’s see if we can find out. Stop right here and count how many times you take a breath in one minute. Ready? Go! When I did this, I counted twenty. How many did you get? Multiply that amount times sixty to get how many times you breathe in an hour. My number was 1,200 times an hour. Next, I multiplied by twenty-four because that’s how many hours there are in one day. The answer? I took 28,800 breaths in one day! Of course, this is only an average, because during some hours of the day I might be exercising—and breathing more rapidly. And during the night hours of each whole day, I’m sleeping—and breathing much more slowly. But probably 28,800 breaths in one day is a good average for me. That’s a lot of breathing! And isn’t it amazing that we breathe all those breaths without even thinking about it? All night long my body breathes while I’m dreaming. Our Creator is truly awesome!

Do you know what is the most amazing breathing ever? When God created Adam and breathed the breath of life into his body. I wonder what that sounded like. Did the sound of God’s breath blend into the sound of Adam’s first breath? Beautiful.

When you look at the Hebrew language for “breath of life,” it doesn’t mean that God just gave Adam the ability to stand up and walk around. He gave Adam everything he needed. He gave Adam his personality, health, mind, and spirit in that one fantastic breath.

God also has breathed into you to make you exactly who you are so that you can be and do wonderful things for his Kingdom and glory. Breathe deeply today knowing God made you on purpose.
