Ring The Dinner Bell, Y’all! I’m Hungry!

Ring the Dinner Bell, Y’all! I’m Hungry!

Bible Blast: Read Deuteronomy 8:2-3

My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.” And my heart responds, “LORD, I am coming.” Psalm 27:8

Have you ever seen an old movie or TV show about pioneer families that shows Ma working over a hot stove, preparing dinner, while the kids play outside and Pa works in the fields? When the beef and potatoes are cooked and the hot rolls are on the table, Ma walks out to the front porch and rings a dinner bell that can be heard all across the land. It goes, “Clang! Clang! Clang!” and the family knows that it’s time to come in and wash up for dinner.

There’s a good chance your mom doesn’t ring a dinner bell to get you to come and eat. However, when you smell your favorite meal simmering on the stove and Mom calls to you, “Dinner’s ready!” you probably don’t waste much time getting to the table. You know you’re going to sit down and taste something wonderful and your body’s going to get nourished from the food.

If you read today’s Bible Blast, you know that we can’t live just by eating food. Our most essential nourishment comes from spending time with God and listening to his Word.

Imagine that every morning, God has prepared something for you—an encouragement, a challenge, a warning, or even a good laugh. And he walks out onto the porch and rings that bell, loudly proclaiming, “Hey! I’ve prepared something for you! Come on in! Stop what you’re doing, and let’s talk! I really want to spend time with you, and you need to spend time with me, so let’s do this! Let’s enjoy each other!” You have a choice right then, don’t you? Either you stop what you’re doing and yell, “Lord, I am coming!” or you continue what you’re doing and say, “Sorry, Lord, but what I’m doing is better for me than what you’ve prepared for me! I’ll catch you next time!”

God loves to spend time with you. If you make a point to have time alone with him, you’ll grow to really love it. My time with Jesus is some of the most precious time I have. I look forward to it, and I love it. I make time for him because I can’t live just by “bread alone.” I need every word that comes out of his mouth and I don’t want to miss it!

Girl Gab: Today I want you and your mom to repeat Psalm 27:8 to the Lord as a prayer. Very simply, say, “My heart has heard you say, ‘Come and talk with me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’”
