Pour On The Salt
Pour on the Salt
Bible Blast: Read Matthew 5:13-16
You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. Matthew 5:13
If you take a trip to the grocery store, you’ll see lots of packages that say things like “Less Salt,” “No Salt Added,” and “Low Sodium” because people who want a healthy heart are cutting back on how much salt they consume. As much as I sometimes want to eat the chips with tons of salt all over them, I know it is a good idea to watch the amount of sodium my body takes in.
As much as the nutrition experts are telling us to cut back on salt, God is saying, “More salt! More salt!” Jesus told his disciples that they were salt. (I wonder if they were tempted to lick the backs of their hands and see if they tasted salty!) How can a person be salt?
Jesus said we are the salt of the earth, so let’s look into what salt is good for.
1) Salt brings out the flavor of food, making it taste better. A Christian’s positive influence in the world helps others see the true flavor of God’s love. She helps others get a taste of the truth of Jesus.
2) Salt tenderizes. When I have a relationship with those who don’t know Christ and I love them, that makes their hearts more tender to receive God’s truth.
3) Salt preserves. Part of our job as Christians is to help God’s Word get really planted into others’ lives. If people hear the truth but don’t have anyone to help them really understand and live it, the truth can get stale in their lives.
Get out there and spread the salt around so you don’t lose your saltiness. Salt doesn’t do any good if it just sits in the shaker.
