Potty Mouth

Bible Blast: Read Isaiah 6:1-8

He touched my lips with it and said, “See, this coal has touched your lips. Now your guilt is removed, and your sins are forgiven.” Isaiah 6:7

Lily sat at the lunch table with her friends and suddenly got very uncomfortable with where the conversation was going. Before she knew it, she was in a conversation with her new friends who were using really foul language.

“Guys, what’s with the cussing?” she said, hoping they would agree with her and watch their language.

One of the girls replied, “Lily, we are going to cuss. If you don’t like it, then you can sit somewhere else.”

Poor Lily. She knew that swearing wasn’t honoring God, but when she took a stand, she got rejected—big time. But Lily did the right thing when she didn’t join in.

Isaiah had a problem with his language; you can read about it in today’s Bible Blast. He describes a vision he had of God on his throne. He’s surrounded by angels worshiping God in song and can even see the glory of God, which was like a bright light. In the midst of all of that heavenly beauty, Isaiah says, “It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips.”

The first thing Isaiah feels is conviction about the things he says that don’t honor God and the people he hangs out with who have the same problem: filthy lips. Maybe a modern-day translation might say, “I live among people with potty mouths!”

After Isaiah realized his problem, one of the angels, called a “seraphim,” flew over to him, touched his lips with a burning coal, and told him his sins were forgiven.

Do you hang out with people who have potty mouths? Is it hard for you to keep your language clean? If you can give God control over your words now as a tween, it will be much easier for you to not have a potty mouth when you’re older.

You can have clean words come out of your mouth every time you speak. God will help you.
