No Shampoo Can Do That!

Bible Blast: Read Judges 16:15-19

Delilah lulled Samson to sleep with his head in her lap, and then she called in a man to shave off the seven locks of his hair. In this way she began to bring him down, and his strength left him.

Judges 16:19

The story of Samson and Delilah is a wild one. In case you didn’t read the section before today’s Bible Blast, I’ll fill you in. Samson was crazy strong. He was so strong that no one could ever capture him. Yet I guess I should say he was physically strong, because he didn’t always show good judgment and he was easily overcome by one beautiful lady named Delilah.

Samson fell head over heels in love with Delilah, who was not an Israelite woman. When the Philistines (the bad guys) found that out, they told her to find out what gave Samson his strength so they could take it from him and make him their prisoner. The Philistines offered to pay her a huge amount of silver if she obeyed them. So every day Delilah asked Samson what was the secret to his strength. Samson told her a few lies to get her to stop asking him about it.

Finally he told her everything (see verse 17). He said, “No razor has ever been used on my head . . . because I have been a Nazirite set apart to God since birth. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man” (NIV). And that’s exactly what she did. Delilah had Samson’s head shaved while he slept, which allowed the bad guys to capture him.

Delilah was a deceitful woman. She used lies to get Samson to compromise his strength, which had been a tool for God. If Samson had not chosen to hang out with her, he may never have been captured.

If you read to the end of the chapter, you’ll see how God used Samson one more time, but it’s still a pretty sad story. In the end, he dies trying to please God with his death.

If a strong guy like Samson can be foolish enough to choose bad friends, so can we. Are your friends bringing you closer to God or farther from him?

Girl Gab: It’s important to take care of your hair and scalp. When you wash your hair, use your fingertips to scrub your entire scalp with shampoo. That will lift up dirt and oils so your hair will be clean. If your hair is really thin, don’t use a heavy conditioner. Just use a detangling spray. If your hair is thick, a conditioner might help keep it tamed down.
