Bible Blast: Read Psalm 121:3-8
He who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps.
Psalm 121:4
When a woodchuck hibernates from October to February, his heart rate drops from about eighty beats per minute down to about four beats per minute! His body temperature drops from 98 degrees to 38 degrees. Did you know that a woodchuck’s front teeth never stop growing? That’s why they always gnaw on wood—to keep them down. Yet when a woodchuck is hibernating, God stops those teeth from growing! Our Creator thought of everything.
Some animals need an extra dose of sleep, especially during the winter. God created these animals to go into a time of deep sleep, or hibernation, during the cold months as a way of dealing with the lack of food. Before hibernation begins, the animal eats like crazy to store up fat in its body to keep it alive while it sleeps. Then it finds a cozy spot to get some major beauty rest.
Knowing that God never sleeps is so comforting. It would be horrible if I needed to talk to him about something really important and he had a “Do Not Disturb” sign hanging on his door!
God doesn’t need to rest in order to stay strong and healthy. Right now you might be thinking, But after God created the world, it says he rested on that seventh day. Yes, that’s true. But that word rest isn’t saying that he was exhausted and just couldn’t hold his head up anymore so he napped on the couch for a day. It means that his work was done, so he stopped to enjoy his creation. He was setting an example that we need to take a day when we don’t work.
Humans and animals need to rest and sleep. If we don’t get enough sleep we can have problems thinking clearly, we get upset easily, and we’re more likely to get sick. Did you know getting enough sleep helps you grow?
The next time you notice your cat sleeping in a patch of sun, or you see your little sister yawn, be reminded that God is always awake and paying attention to your life.
Girl Gab: Do you think you would like to hibernate? What would some of the positives and negatives be if humans slept through the winter? Praise God that he never snoozes!
