Like Putty in His Hands

Bible Blast: Read Romans 9:20-24

O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, and you are the potter. We all are formed by your hand. Isaiah 64:8

Working with clay is a blast. You can form it into just about any shape you can imagine. I just love the feeling of wet, slippery clay under my hands when I’m using a pottery wheel. When I was your age, I made my mom a lot of things out of clay—pots, cups, frogs.

Even if you’re not really great at sculpting, clay still feels really good in your hands as you move it and shape it. It’s fun to use little tools to create different designs. And if you don’t like what you’ve created, you can ball it up and start over again.

After you’ve made your shape, you need to put it in a kiln to “cook” it. This makes the clay hard. Then there’s the colorful step of painting your sculpture! The glaze used to color clay is weird because it doesn’t really look like the color it’s going to be when you’re painting it on. But after you fire it in the kiln again, the colors come shining through!

When the shaping, baking, painting or glazing, and re-baking is all done, you have your very own masterpiece!

Doesn’t it feel good to create something?

Our heavenly Father created you in the same way. In your birth mom’s belly, he began molding and shaping your body to be just what he wanted it to be from the top of your beautiful head to the bottoms of your cute feet. He even “painted” your sparkling eyes, gorgeous hair, and stunning skin just the way he wanted.

The day you were born, he said, “My masterpiece.”

You are more priceless than a clay sculpture.

You are more gorgeous than any vase ever made.

You are more important than anybody’s water pitcher.

You are not replaceable.

Just like today’s focus verse says, you were formed by God’s hand! So when you look in the mirror, you can know absolutely that you are a priceless masterpiece created by your heavenly Father.
