It’s a Great Big World

Bible Blast: Read Psalm 104:1-4

Amelia was born in Atchison, Kansas, in 1897. When she became an adult, she started out as a nurse for the soldiers who got wounded in World War I. It didn’t take her long to realize she didn’t really want to be a nurse. Amelia really wanted to become a pilot.

By now you might know I’m talking about Amelia Earhart.

Now you might be thinking, What’s the big deal? Why didn’t she just go to pilot school and become a pilot? Well, things were much different for women in Amelia Earhart’s time. Airplanes had just been invented when Amelia was born, and only brave, strong men flew them, not women. But Amelia wasn’t the type of girl who gave up easily.

While living in California, Amelia got a job and saved money so she could take flying lessons. In 1928, she became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean as a passenger, and she loved the experience.

In 1932 Amelia became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean as the pilot. It took about fifteen hours, but today that would only take about five hours. She became the first woman to attempt many flights, but her biggest goal was to fly around the world.

She and a copilot began the trip around the world in 1937, but they didn’t make it. It’s actually quite a mystery because Amelia Earhart was never seen again after she left for that trip. Friends on the ground kept contact with her until she was somewhere over the Pacific Ocean, but no one knows what happened after that.

Can you understand Amelia’s desire to see the whole world? I think it would be amazing to have God’s view of the earth. He sees every animal, person, tree, flower, body of water, and snowcapped mountain.

The world is truly an amazing place. Let’s enjoy it.
