Dance like David

Bible Blast: Read Psalm 150:1-6

Praise him with the tambourine and dancing; praise him with strings and flutes! Psalm 150:4

Chizuruoke (pronounced “cheez-uh-roe-kay”) has a gift for dance. Born to Nigerian Christian parents, she began to use dance as a normal way of expressing worship. Every now and then she’ll prepare a special dance for our church. I don’t know how to explain how I feel when I see her move in such worshipful ways to the rhythm of music that glorifies God. I cry almost every time.

I’m not such a gifted dancer as Chizuruoke, but I have had times in my life when I’ve danced before God to praise him. It’s kind of like when you’re getting ready finally to see your favorite singer in the world in concert, and you’re so excited you just start jumping up and down and spinning around, squealing happy squeals. That’s how I get about Jesus sometimes. I just love him so much that I can’t possibly hold it in anymore.

In the Bible, David was a serious dancer. It says in 2 Samuel 6:14 that he “danced before the Lord with all his might.” For a moment, picture what it would look like if a man danced with all his might. We’re not talking about a slow, controlled waltz, are we? David was totally giving his entire body to worship God. He just couldn’t contain his worship, and he didn’t care who knew it.

Psalm 150 sounds like a party to me. Just look at all the instruments listed in there: horns, harps, tambourines, flutes, cymbals. The idea behind that psalm is that we absolutely, positively, 100 percent need to give everything we have when we praise and worship God. Don’t let anything hold you back from giving it all in worship. Dance like David if you want to!
