Got Talent?

Bible Blast: Read Matthew 25:14-30

A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men.

Proverbs 18:16 (NASB)

A man was getting ready to go on a long trip. He called his three servants together before he left. He gave one servant five talents, another two talents, and the third guy one talent. He gave them the money hoping they would make wise choices with it while he was gone.

The “five talent” guy used his money to make five more talents. He did this by investing and risking a little. Smart! The “two talent” guy worked hard and earned two more talents. He also invested by risking a bit. Another great idea! But the guy with one talent buried it in a hole in the ground. He didn’t want to risk losing what had been entrusted to him.

When the boss came back, he asked the three men what they had done with their talents. The first two guys told their boss how they actually doubled the amount of money he gave them, and the boss was really proud of them. He said to each of them, “Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!”

The third guy told his boss he had buried his talent because he was afraid. The boss was the opposite of happy about that. He made that guy give his talent to the first guy, who already had ten. Then he sent him away.

This parable, or story, teaches us that God has given each of us talents and gifts that are especially ours, and we shouldn’t be afraid to use them. When we have courage in doing what we’re good at, God will cause those gifts to grow in us for the blessing of others. It might mean taking some risks. For example, maybe you have a beautiful singing voice. It can be scary to try singing in front of an audience, but you’ll never be able to use that gift for God unless you risk a little!

Chidi Ukazim, a beautiful Nigerian woman I know, said this: “The world is poorer when you don’t share the unique gifts that God has given you.” So let’s make the world richer by using our gifts for God’s glory!
