Fruit in My Eyeballs?

Bible Blast: Read Psalm 17:6-8

Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings. Psalm 17:8 (NIV)

If a guy’s feeling mushy gushy lovey dovey, he might tell his girlfriend that she’s the “apple of his eye.” That doesn’t mean that he really loves apples and she reminds him of one and that’s why he loves her so much. It’s a saying that means his girlfriend is the most important thing in the world to him, that she’s all he ever wants to see.

When you see that phrase in our focus verse today, it means pretty much the same thing. This reference to the “apple” of the eye is talking about the eye’s pupil.

The pupil is the very center of the eye. It looks like a black circle. The pupil is surrounded by the iris, which is the colored part of your eye. The pupil’s job is to let in the right amount of light so your eye can see clearly. The iris causes the pupil to get bigger or smaller depending on how dark or light it is. If you hang out in a dark room for a bit, your pupils will get really big to let in as much light as possible. When it’s really bright out, the pupil gets tiny to block some light.

So what could it mean when we ask God to keep us as the apple of his eye?

To figure that out, I want you to get your mom, if she’s not already with you right now. Got her? Make sure you have a bright light on. I want you to look right into each other’s eyes. You’ll have to get pretty close, so if you haven’t brushed your teeth yet or your mom has coffee breath, you may want to take care of that first! Now, when your eyes are wide open looking into your mom’s eyes, do you see anything in her pupil? If the lighting is right and you’re not too close to her, you should see your own reflection! Do you see it? Does she see her reflection in your pretty eyes?

Being the apple of God’s eye means we’re really close to him, and we already know he never lets us out of his sight. Get so close to God that he sees his reflection in your eyes.
