Fresh Fruit: Goodness

Bible Blast: Read Genesis 1:1-10

The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, GOODNESS, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Galatians 5:22-23

The first few days when our earth was created were a pretty big deal! Basically God had six amazing days. He invented planets, sunshine, zebras, and the crazy Blue-footed Booby birds. (They’re real. I promise.) He romped with giraffes, soaked his toes in the first few waves of the earth’s oceans, and viewed the first-ever sunset and sunrise. He figured out how to make living beings out of the tiniest of atoms and created his best friend, Adam. And then, he said, “What I’ve created is good.”

Just “good”? “Good” seems like such a blah way to describe the creation of the whole universe. I mean, macaroni and cheese is good. The world and all its creatures are great or awesome or totally and incredibly amazing!

I don’t think when God said it was “good” that he was saying, “Well. That’s okay. I’ll just go with that.” He had used great care and precision in crafting each and every cell. Our world was a perfect, complete place where God and his creation were together all the time, with no misunderstandings or problems coming between them. It was completely good. God was saying, “I did my best. This is ‘good.’”

Do you do your best? When you are given an assignment from school, do you put your whole heart into it so that it’s “good”? When your mom or dad asks you to clean your room, do you dig in with the vacuum cleaner and dust rag so that the finished job is “good”?

Goodness means “done well.”

Take some time today to write down a few things you each do really well, and a few you each want to start doing better. Some of the things you think of will already be good. Other areas are ones you can aspire to “be good.” Give yourself some encouragement, and identify an area in which you can start working to improve right away.
