Amazing Animals: The Four-Eyed Frog

We don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

2 Corinthians 4:18

Does it ever seem that your mom must have eyes on the back of her head? While it may feel as if she sees everything, she probably doesn’t actually have four eyeballs. (If you’re not sure, go ahead and check the back of her head right now!)

So if your mom doesn’t have four eyes, is it possible for a frog to have four eyes? The gray four-eyed frog lives way down in Chile and other parts of South America. It’s a cute little animal with two glands that look just like big eyes on its back end. When the frog is threatened by a predator, it tucks its head down, spins around, and sticks its rear up in the face of the bad guy. Sometimes this intimidates the attacker into leaving the frog alone. But if that doesn’t work, the four-eyed frog has another secret trick. Those “eyes” release a bit of yucky-tasting poison if something bites them. That sends the predator running away looking for something tastier to eat!

The gray four-eyed frog isn’t the only animal that has a set of fake eyes. Many fish, snakes, butterflies, moths, beetles, and caterpillars have some kind of pattern on them to look like an extra set of eyes. It’s a fantastic weapon for animals that may not have other ways to defend themselves.

All this talk about eyeballs has got me thinking. What should we be looking at? Whether you have one eye or thousands of eyes like some butterflies do, all our eyes should be focused on just one type of thing: things that last forever.

If your mind spends all its time worrying about bad things going on around you, it will be very easy to get totally sad. God wants us to spend more time focusing on him and his promise of heaven. When we do that, we’ll be full of hope, and that hope will attract other people to Jesus.

So keep your eyes open—just make sure they’re eyeballin’ the right things!
