Amazing Animals: Nubs the Dog

Bible Blast: Read Matthew 7:7-11

If you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him. Matthew 7:11

Marine Major Brian Dennis first met the German shepherd–Border collie mix on the snowy desert of the Iraq-Syria border. He was a wild dog looking for food from American soldiers as they patrolled war-torn villages. The scrappy dog’s ears had been brutally clipped, which is why the soldiers named him “Nubs.”

The soldiers’ patrol brought them into the area every week for three months, and each time they were greeted by scavenging dogs. The local people didn’t like the dogs, but the American soldiers enjoyed their company and were kind to them. One very cold day, the dogs came over to the soldiers, who noticed Nubs wasn’t doing well. He was shaking and could hardly stand up. When Brian checked him out, he noticed a hole in the side of his chest. The villagers told them someone had actually stabbed the sweet dog with a screwdriver. The soldiers got the team doctor to check Nubs and treat him.

Soon Brian and the other soldiers had to leave. They were being moved seventy miles away. As they drove off, they looked back and saw Nubs slowly following their vehicles. They watched him until they couldn’t see him anymore.

Two days later, when Brian Dennis was in a meeting, one of his men ran in and said, “You’re not going to believe who’s outside!” When Brian stepped outside, he couldn’t believe his eyes. It was Nubs! He had tracked the soldiers across seventy miles of wilderness in the cold! What a great gift he was to the soldiers, who missed their families. Brian arranged to have Nubs vaccinated and flown to the United States to live with him in California.

Even something as interesting as a dog who tracks you down for seventy miles in the desert is a great gift from God. Every good gift is from God.
