True Words

True Words

How do I know if I’m giving a true compliment and not flattery?

God’s Response

Even when you do ask, you don’t get it because your whole motive is wrong —you want only what will give you pleasure. James 4:3

May the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart be pleasing to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14

In the end, people appreciate frankness more than flattery. Proverbs 28:23

The difference between a compliment and flattery is found in the motivation behind the words. A sincere compliment is about the other person, designed to build him or her up. Flattery is all about you, saying something nice just to get something in return. Never ignore your conscience —it will tell you if you are being sincere.

God’s Promise

He died for us so that we can live with him forever. . . . So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:10-11
