Really Afraid
Really Afraid
Sometimes I feel really afraid. What can I do when I am overcome by fear?
God’s Response
A leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, pleading fervently with him. “My little daughter is dying,” he said. “Please come and lay your hands on her; heal her so she can live.” . . . Messengers arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. They told him, “Your daughter is dead. There’s no use troubling the Teacher now.”But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.” Mark 5:22-23, 35-36
When they saw him walking on the water, they cried out in terror. . . . Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage! I am here!” Mark 6:49-50
Why did Jesus tell all these people not to be afraid? He knew that fear would paralyze them. It keeps you from moving out in courage to do the things God wants you to do. It keeps you from trusting God to take care of you. It convinces you that you will fail, that you will let others down, and that God will not help when you need it most. In short, fear consumes you until you can’t think straight. When you are frightened, stop and focus on God. Picture him fighting by your side and your fear will begin to melt away.
This Is Promising
