How can I be genuine when I compliment someone and not sound like I’m just flattering them?

Neighbors lie to each other, speaking with flattering lips and deceitful hearts. May the LORD cut off their flattering lips and silence their boastful tongues. Psalm 12:2-3

A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. Matthew 12:35

The difference between a compliment and flattery is in the motivation behind the words. A compliment is all about the other person, and is designed to build that person up. Flattery is all about you, and is a scheme to get what you want. You don’t have to worry about how you come across to others. They’ll know whether you mean your words or not. To sound genuine, be genuine.
