Hypocrisy

Hypocrisy

Sometimes I hear people accusing Christians of being hypocrites. How can I avoid being a hypocrite?

God’s Response

Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye. Matthew 7:5

Hypocrites! For you are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy—full of greed and self-indulgence! Matthew 23:25

Hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs—beautiful on the outside but filled on the inside with dead people’s bones and all sorts of impurity. Matthew 23:27

Jesus called many religious people hypocrites because they knew the Scriptures but did not live by them. Today, as in Jesus’ day, many people who know the Bible do not let it change their lives. They say they follow Jesus, but they don’t live by his standards of love and obedience. They go to church, but not for the right reasons. People who say one thing and live something different are hypocrites. You can avoid being a hypocrite by making sure that your actions match what you say you believe.
